Belated January Roundup

Just a quick post (albeit weeks late) to round up the first month of the year.

So, we had the following miniatures all completed last month:

2 x Irish Brigade Regiments (42 minis in total - 28mm scale)

1 x Brigade of Scottish in Dutch Service (24 minis in 28mm scale)

1 x Unit of Roman Hastati (24 minis in 15mm Scale)

That's a grand total of 90 minis finished in one month - I have to say I am very, very happy with that. In terms of my target of the year of 600 minis, it gives me a great headstart and it adds up to 378 points (under the Analougue paiting system) towards my 2021 target of 2000 points.

For the first month of the year - I'll take it!

Hobby bingo wise, we weren't allowed any duplciation in January, but I was able to use those four units to close three boxes - a "unit of 10+ models", a "unit of 2+" models, and "any model." 30 points overall so far, which i believe puts me in the lead amongst the three of us taking part.

Hastati Completed

I've unintentionlly fallen behind somewhat with my blog posts - I had intended to post more often in January, but was so busy painting and doing overtime I didn't get chance.  So a lot of the posts over the next few weeks will actually be from my January output.

Way back in 2019 I decided that I would get into Warmaster Ancients, and went for 15mm. I chose the War and Empre range from Forged in Battle and ordered the republican army start set, as my friend ordered the Carthagians. We had big plans (as always) but they fell by the way side.

Fast forward to January and I've finally painted nealy all of them. The most recent is a unit of Hastati (I hope I spelt that right!).

During the Republican period, there were three types of legionnaires. At the rear were the veterans, the Triariri. In front of them were the more experienced soldiers, the Principes and at the very front (excluding the skirkmishers) were the Hastati. These were the new boys.

Here is my unit of those young bucks:

These were painted in the old base coat, wash, highlight method. I have gone to the trouble of adding shield transfers from Little Big Man Studios. Fiddly to do in this scale, but I think they finish the unit off.

The unit itself is 24 strong, and mounted on 40mm by 40mm bases. Whilst based for warmaster, they could easily do double duty for Hail Caeser.

I now have just one unit of the starter army box set, the cavalry, to do. They are not too far down the queue. Currently, this is the state of the army:

It's turning into a tidy little force and consists of two units of Velites (the skirmishers) a unit each of the three types of legionnaires and a general. I would need to roughly double the size of the army for a reasonable game of Warmaster, so that will have to be the plan.

The next stage is to find some opponents for them. Warmaster allows armies from different time periods to face off, so I just need to find another amy to collect.

Christmas 2015

Little bit late, due to family festivites, drinking and general merriment but here is my Christmas haul.

First up I have some Bolt Action reinforcements:

For the Germans we have some artillery (a 10.5cm gun no less), a Flakvierling and a heavy mortar whilst the Brits get a 25 pounder gun.

For my naps I got a box set of Perry Miniatures Brits. This should give me enough to field three batalions if I use the leftover Warlord guys and get some more command minis:

Next up was these:

That should give me a good start to get a Dacian army going for Hail Caeser. Going to need a lot more though.

The big one:

Been wanting this for a while, ever since I had a couple of games a while ago. Was great fun and might even be a game I can get the wife involved in!

Now this little gift seems insignificant:

It's a chargable daylight lamp. It should allow me to set up a collapsible paint station down stairs. These means I can paint more often as well as keeping the wife company. Win!

The only down side to all these gifts is I now have an unapinted mini pile bigger than ever before - going to be busy.

Hail Caesar Battle Report

I have been playing a fair bit of Hail Caesar of late, and thoroughly enjoying it. A friend of mine, Tim, who I have met through attending several of the large games put on by Like a Stone Wall wargames group, has the most extensive mini collection I know of. He is the one who has introudced me to this game and the anicent period in general and in this game he very kindly lent both myself and my friend Chris the armies we used and acted as umpire.

So I plumped for Dacians. I had three divisions in total. Two of these consisted of three warbands and an archer unit, with the warbands split evenly in terms of Flax armed or not. The third division was my cavalry division, consisting of three light cavalry units and a unit of Sarmatian Cataphracts. There was also a looted bolt thrower that eventually did nothing.

Chris was fielding Alexanders Macedonians. He had opted for crack troops, giving him just two divisions, one of heavy cavalry (including Alexander and his companions) and a infantry division containing 3 heavy phalanxs of pike and some skirmishers.

Here is my battle line:

I deployed the two infantry divisions in the centre and on the right flank with my cavalry on my left. My rought plan was for the cavalry to hold their ground to give my infantry time to use their superior numbers to outflank the pike blocks, two of which can be seen here:

For the first few turns the infantry advanced towards each other slowly, with my misreading of the terrain causing my right flank to bunch up (later with fatal results). It was the cavalry that stole the show in this early stage.

Chris threw his companions and other heavy cavalry unit head on into my cataphracts. In the first round of combat I was pushed back, but then in the second round my cavalry began to push back, driving the Macdonian cavalry back. Another of my light cavalry units wiped out one of Chris' and things were initially looking rosy.

In the mean time the infantry closed:

I got lucky at this point. As you can see in this picture, the very top block of pike engaged a warband. However, the middle block took some fire from an archer unit and was forced to back, creating a gap. I was then able to use on warband to pin the third block in place, whilst another outflanked it:

We discovered at this point that pike blocks don't like being flanked, and in a single round of combat they were wiped out with minimal loss to me.

It was around now things went wrong. The cavalary combat that had ground on on the flank finally went the Macedonians way, and my cavalry collapsed very quickly. Along with this, some pesky peltasts pinned my most flankward warband, preventing it turning to block the cavalry. They held just long enough to allow the cavalry to start rolling up the infantrys flank:

At the same time, my flanking warband was in turn hit in the flank by the previously pushed back pike block after the archers I had hoped to block it failed:

At the same time, on the extreme flank the griding combat of pike-v-warband went on. The warband were gradually losing and were pushed back into a second warband, dragging them into the combat as a direct result of the earlier bunching.

Then came the coup-de-grace. With my cavalary divsion already broken, in one turn the two flanked warbands went down, and the extreme fight on the flank resolved itself when the first warband lost. Unfortunatley, this took the supporting, untouched warband behind them with it, breaking a second divsion and handing Chris the game.

Overall, it was a really great game that see-sawed back and forth more than the end result suggested. Had a few rolls gone the other way I think the Dacians could have taken it. Hail Caeasr is a game I would highly recommend. I will certainly be building an army for it soon, I just can't decided which one!
